What is Amerge (Naratriptan)?

Amerge contains the generic ingredient naratriptan and is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine headaches. Naratriptan belongs to a family of drugs known as selective serotonin 5-HT1-receptor agonists. They are also known more simply as triptans.

Why do doctors prescribe this drug?

Standard painkillers or analgesics may relieve headache and some doctors prescribe medications such as NSAIDs as a first-line treatment to relieve headache pain. When these drugs are not effective, your doctor may prescribe a triptan, such as Amerge.

How does Amerge work?

Migraine headaches are thought to be caused by the swelling of the blood vessels in the brain. Triptans affect certain receptors in the brain and constrict the blood vessels, thereby alleviating the pain.

How and when to take it

Amerge should not be used continuously to prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks you experience. Use this medication only when you actually have a migraine headache. You should take this medication as you start to feel a migraine headache develop and NOT before this. This medication is taken orally. It can be taken with or without food.

Naratriptan side effects

  • Ear, nose and throat infections
  • Nausea, vomiting

These may not be all the side effects of Amerge.

Contraindications

Do not take Amerge if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, severe liver or kidney disease, or have taken another triptan within the last 24 hours. Speak to your doctor before taking Amerge if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

Report any of the following conditions to your doctor before using this medication: blood vessel problems, heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or seizures. Do not take Amerge with other triptans.
