What is Delsym?

Delsym is the trade name of a drug containing dextromethorphan as the active component. It belongs to a class of drugs called antitussives, commonly used for cough suppression, often used in combination with other actives such as analgesics, antipyretics, antihistamines, and decongestants. Delsym is manufactured as an extended-release drug, therefore its action in cough suppression last longer with 30mg of the active component available per 5ml of the solution. It is manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals and is available as an oral liquid.

Active ingredient

Dextromethorphan is the active ingredient, and it works by interfering with signals in the brain which induce or trigger reflex cough. It is used as a cough suppressant.

Contraindications

• The use of Delsym is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to dextromethorphan or any of the excipients used in the formulation.

Precautions

• Dextromethorphan should not be used for chronic or persistent cough associated with asthma, smoking and emphysema, or when there is excessive secretion.
• Consult a doctor if cough persists for longer than one week.
• Sensitivity reaction maybe associated with histamine release, use with caution in atopic children.
• Use with caution in debilitated or sedated patients
• There is a potential for abuse with the use of these drug
