What is Nausea
Nausea can be described as a sensation of discomfort and uneasiness in the stomach, often accompanied by an involuntary urge to vomit. Sometimes it may precede vomiting; however, many patients experience nausea without actually vomiting.
Nausea or vomiting is not a disease, but a sign or symptom of an underlying condition; hence, making it a non-specific symptom.
Some common causes of nausea include: Motion sickness, Low blood sugar, Food poisoning, Gastroenteritis, Migraines, Depression, Dizziness, Chemotherapy, Some forms of cancer, Emotional stress, Early stages of pregnancy, Overheating and Medications.
Nausea or vomiting may differ with the age of the patient (children vs adults), as children are more affected by food poisoning, coughing, high fever, blocked intestines, and viral infections.
The group of medications used to prevent and treat nausea is called antiemetic, and the most commonly prescribed anti-nausea pills include metoclopramide, ondansetron, and promethazine. You can get over-the-counter anti-nausea medication such as Gravol Comfort-Shaped Suppositories 100mg, Gravol Kids Comfort-Shaped Suppositories 25mg, among other anti-nausea medications.
Treatment and prevention of nausea
The treatment of nausea is based on the actual cause; however, in most of the cases it resolves itself.
The actual treatment can include use of fluids with a clear diet and use of medications. At times, using plain food such as crackers and bread, can make one feel better. Avoid food with strong flavors, as they might make the nausea worse.
Parents often use natural remedies such as ginger (Gravol Natural Source Ginger) and some patients might find relief by applying pressure on the stomach or wrist. If you are healthy and prone to nausea, you should avoid excessive activities after eating and make sure to eat in small portions at a time. Do not ride in the back seat of the car if you frequently develop motion sickness. Whenever you feel a wave of nausea, take deep breaths and do not think about vomiting because it might make it worse.
