Information About Atacand and/or Equivalents

What is it?

Atacand, also known by its generic name candesartan, is a drug indicated for high blood pressure and heart failure. Being an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, it significantly reduces the risk of hospitalization and increases the survival rate in heart failure. Atacand is developed by AstraZeneca, a multinational biopharmaceutical company based in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Active ingredients

Atacand is formulated with candesartan cilexetil, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). Due to its high affinity for AT1 receptors, candesartan effectively inhibits the binding of angiotensin II to these receptors, thereby blocking vasoconstriction and the release of aldosterone. AT1 receptors, which are typically found in adrenal gland and vascular smooth muscle, are believed to play a role in the modulation of cardiovascular hemostasis.

Conditions treated

Atacand is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure (may be used in conjunction with other drugs)

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure (sometimes referred to as hypertension) refers to a blood pressure reading of more than 140mm/Hg (systolic), or 90mm/Hg (diastolic). It is characterized by a persistently high force of blood against the artery wall. While hypertension does not cause immediate signs and symptoms, if left unattended, it can potentially lead to heart attack, aneurysm or other life-threatening complications.

What is heart failure?

Heart failure (or cardiac failure) is a condition in which the heart fails to pump blood efficiently, leading to shortness of breath and fatigue. Edema may also occur due to the accumulation of fluid in the ankles, feel and legs. Typically, heart failure is a complication of diseases like hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease. Some of the risk factors that increase your chance of getting heart failure are old age, ethnicity and obesity.

Each blister pack contains 30 Atacand tablets, which are pink in color. The recommended dosage for adults is as follows.
