Information About Bystolic and/or Equivalents
What is it?
Bystolic contains the generic medicinal ingredient nebivolol, which belongs to a family of drugs called beta blockers. The drug is prescribed to treat high blood pressure.
Why do doctors prescribe Bystolic?
Doctors prescribe this medicine to hypertensive patients to reduce blood pressure. Doctors may add another medicine like a diuretic (water pill) or an ACE inhibitor to take along with this medicine.
How does this medication work?
The drug works by blocking beta receptors in the heart. This reduces the effect of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the heart, resulting in slower and less forceful heartbeats. Bystolic also widens the blood vessels, which helps to lower the blood pressure.
How and when to take it
The usual starting dose is 5mg per day. Take a tablet orally once daily, with or without food. Try to take your dose at around the same time each day.
The most common negative effects include
- dry mouth
- joint and back pain
- stuffy nose and colds
- trouble sleeping
These may not be all the side effects of Bystolic.
Do not use Bystolic if you have a slow or irregular heartbeat, severe liver disease, severe heart damage or heart failure.
Before taking this medication, tell you doctor if you have asthma, diabetes, thyroid problems or a history of fainting. It is important to let your doctor know if you are scheduled for surgery and will be given an anaesthetic.
How to store it
Store at room temperature (15º to 30ºC), away from light. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
What is hypertension?
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is too high and may eventually cause serious health problems. Known as the “silent killer”, hypertension generally has no symptoms. You usually can’t tell that you have high blood pressure unless you are tested. Readings of more than 140/90 mm Hg represent high blood pressure. Generally, more importance is given to the top number (systolic blood pressure) as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease for people over 50. In most people, systolic blood pressure (bottom number) gradually increases with age due to factors like stiffening of the large arteries and build-up of plaque on the walls of blood vessels.
