What is Bystolic (Nebivolol)?
Bystolic contains the generic medicinal ingredient nebivolol, which belongs to a family of drugs called beta blockers. The drug is prescribed to treat high blood pressure.
Why do doctors prescribe this drug?
Doctors prescribe this medicine to hypertensive patients to reduce blood pressure. Doctors may add another medicine like a diuretic (water pill) or an ACE inhibitor to take along with this medicine.
How does this medication work?
The drug works by blocking beta receptors in the heart. This reduces the effect of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the heart, resulting in slower and less forceful heartbeats. Bystolic also widens the blood vessels, which helps to lower the blood pressure.
How and when to take Nebivolol
The usual starting dose is 5mg per day. Take a tablet orally once daily, with or without food. Try to take your dose at around the same time each day.
The most common negative effects include:
- dry mouth

- trouble sleeping
These may not be all the side effects of Bystolic.
Do not use Bystolic if you have a slow or irregular heartbeat, severe liver disease, severe heart damage or heart failure.
Before taking this medication, tell you doctor if you have asthma, diabetes, thyroid problems or a history of fainting. It is important to let your doctor know if you are scheduled for surgery and will be given an anaesthetic.
