Why is Diovan HCT prescribed to treat high blood pressure?

Diovan HCT is a combination medication, meaning it contains two different drugs that work together for you. The first drug is a generic drug called valsartan. Valsartan works by suppressing a hormone in your body known as angiotensin II. This is the hormone that is responsible for naturally raising your blood pressure. The other drug in Diovan HCT is called hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). HCTZ is a diuretic, also known as a “water pill,” which essentially tells your body to remove excess water. The result is an effective reduction in blood pressure to safe levels.

When is Diovan HCT prescribed to treat high blood pressure?

Diovan HCT is not meant to be used as a beginning treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). In most cases your doctor will first suggest a lifestyle change, including a change in diet and exercise, to reduce your blood pressure. If these changes do not reduce your blood pressure to a safe or healthy level, or if you are unable to make a change in your lifestyle, then your doctor will likely prescribe a medication to lower your blood pressure. What are the side effects of taking Diovan HCT?
