Product Information

What is Rythmol?

Rythmol is the trade name of a prescription drug containing propafenone as the active component. Rythmol belongs to a class of heart medications called antiarrhythmic (certain types of irregular heartbeats) used to prolong recurrence time of atrial fibrillation (symptomatic) in patients who suffer from episodic persistent or paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and who do not have any structural heart disease. It is available as an immediate release tablet and as an extended release drug in different strengths of 150mg, 300mg (immediate release), and 225mg, 325mg, and 42mg (extended release). It was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989 and is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.

Active ingredient

Propafenone is the active component of Rythmol, which has a stabilizing effect on the myocardium membrane and local aesthetic effect. It is used in patients with irregular heartbeats. Rythmol works by reducing the amount of sodium reaching the cells of the cardiac muscles, thereby causing a reduction in the rate at which the cells become excited leading to regulation of heartbeats.

Conditions treated

  • Rapid or irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias)

Generic vs brand name

There is a generic version of Rythmol called propafenone. The generic is as effective as the brand name.
