Information About Tri-Cyclen Lo

Tri-Cyclen Lo is an oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate. It is designed to prevent unplanned pregnancies. This oral contraceptive is supplied in a pouch that contains a blister card of 28 coated tablets. Tri-Cyclen Lo is developed and manufactured by Janssen Ortho LLC.  This formulation has been approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is a prescription medication.

Active ingredients

Tri-Cyclen Lo contains the hormones norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol as its active ingredients. Norgestimate is a progesterone that helps to regulate menstruation and ovulation. Having high estrogenic potency, ethinyl estradiol is known to demonstrate agonist activities at estrogen receptors. The hormones work synergistically to inhibit ovulation, thereby preventing unintended pregnancy.

Conditions treated

Tri-Cyclen Lo is indicated for prevention of unintended pregnancy.

Dosage information

You can choose to start the treatment on Sunday or the first day of your period (day-1). Continue to take the pills every day for 21 days consecutively. You should take Tri-Cyclen Lo tablets at the same time every day. After 21 days, take the reminder pills (which are dark green in color) for 7 days in a row. You should begin the next pack on the day after the last reminder pill is taken.

Alternatively, you may begin taking the oral contraceptive on Sunday. Take the first active pill on the first Sunday after your period begins. During the first 7 days of treatment, you should use extra contraception (non-hormonal birth control such as spermicide and condoms) to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy. Take the active pills once a day for 21 days consecutively. Then, take the placebo tablets for the next 7 days. You should begin the next pack on the Sunday after the last placebo tablet is taken.

Tri-Cyclen Lo (norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol) is available in the dosage strengths of 0.180 mg/0.025mg, 0.215mg/0.025mg and 0.250mg/0.025mg.

Frequently asked questions

How does Tri-Cyclen Lo work?

Tri-Cyclen Lo is formulated with both norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol. Having ovulation-suppressing properties, norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol help to prevent unplanned pregnancy in female patients. The hormones also exert their contraceptive actions through other mechanisms. For example, they alter the cervical mucus to prevent the penetration of sperm. At the same time, ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate trigger changes in the endometrium to impede implantation.

How to store it

Keep Tri-Cyclen Lo pills at a room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (or 20°C and 25°C). Avoid exposure to light. As with all medications, keep out of reach of children.

Is there an alternative generic brand to Tri-Cyclen Lo?

A generic alternative of Tri-Cyclen Lo is available as norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol.

What if I overdose on Tri-Cyclen Lo?

An overdose of Tri-Cyclen Lo is unlikely to cause any severe complications. However, you may experience nausea or withdrawal bleeding if you ingest too many tablets. As a precaution, you should seek medical attention immediately if you overdose on Tri-Cyclen Lo. Go to the nearest hospital or call the local Poison Information Center.

What if I miss a dose of Tri-Cyclen Lo?

Take this medication regularly to ensure its effectiveness. A missed dose will increase the risk of becoming pregnant. If you forget to take 1 active tablet, you may need to take 2 tablets on the same day. Then resume the once daily regimen for the remainder of the pack. If you forget to take 2 active tablets in a row in week 1/week 2, use 2 tablets daily for 2 consecutive days. Then resume the normal dosing regimen for the remainder of the pills. You should use backup contraception for at least 1 week after a missed dose. If 2 active tablets are missed in week 3, discard the remainder of the pack and use a new pack on that day. This applies to day-1 starter. Sunday starters should continue to take a tablet every day until Sunday, then dispose of the remainder of the pack and use a new pack on the same Sunday. If more than 2 tablets are missed, you may not menstruate that month. If you do not get a period for 2 months consecutively, contact the doctor immediately to determine if you are pregnant.
