Product Information - Zytram

What is Zytram?

Zytram is the trade name for a drug manufactured and marketed as an extended release formulation of different strengths: XL 150 mg, 200 mg, 300mg, and 400mg. It is a synthetic opioid used to treat moderate-to-severe pain. It has also been used as an alternative in patients who cannot take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). However, it should be noted that tramadol has no known anti-inflammatory properties. Hence, they can be used together with NSAIDs for pain management in inflammatory conditions, but not as a replacement for anti-inflammatories.

Active ingredients

Tramadol hydrochloride acts as a morphine receptor agonist and also a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. This means that it has similar pharmacological profile as morphine as it mimics its activity. This is why tramadol on its own has a self-synergistic type analgesic action. The maximum recommended daily dose is a total of 400mg. The extended-release tablets combat the increase and decrease of drug plasma levels often found with the immediate release formulation since tramadol has a half-life of approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Conditions treated

Zytram is mainly used to treat moderate-to-severe pain. It can be used chronically for pain management in cancer patients, in people suffering from lower back pain, and many forms of orthopedic or neuropathic pain.

Generic and brand name

Zytram is the brand name for the drug tramadol hydrochloride. There are other brands and generics available on the market. They may be available in different forms such as immediate- and prolonged-release tablets.

Indications and dosage

Zytram XL is a prolonged-release dose formulation available in several strengths: 150mg, 200mg, 300mg, and 400mg. The different strengths are prescribed depending on the severity of the pain and/or condition being treated. This would be determined by the prescribing physician.

Extended release tablets are meant to be taken whole and not crushed or chewed. This is because they are designed to be released into the body slowly over a period of 12 hours. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or break the tablet.

Always take your tablets exactly as recommended by your prescribing physician. The dose is usually meant to be repeated every 12 hours. Contact your doctor if you are not sure of the correct dose.
