Alphagan P eye drops contain the generic ingredient called brimonidine which belongs to the class of medications called alpha-2-adrenergic receptor agonists. This medication is used to control the pressure inside the eyeball in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
For patients who have chronic open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, doctors prescribe Alphagan P to reduce the pressure inside the eyeball which can lead to impaired vision. Brimonidine eye drops are used to treat glaucoma in people who cannot use beta-blocker eye drops.
When the fluid, or aqueous humour, inside the eyes does not drain out normally, pressure increases inside the eyeball that can lead to damage to the optic nerve. Alphagan P work by reducing the amount of fluid that the eye produces as well as increasing the draining of the fluid.
Place one drop of Alphagan P in each eye, three times daily, about eight hours apart. Close your eye for 30 seconds after application. If you use this glaucoma medication with other eye drops, wait at least five minutes between doses.
These may not be all the side effects
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to brimonidine tartrate or any of the other ingredients in these drops or if you are receiving monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor therapy.
Before taking this medication, let your doctor know about other medications you are taking such as sedatives, alpha-agonists, beta-blockers, antihypertensives, cardiac glycoside, tricyclic antidepressants and clonidine.
Store these eye drops at room temperature and out of the reach of children.
Pressure within the eyeball is continuously regulated by a flow of liquid called aqueous humour through the eyeball. If the outflow of aqueous humour is blocked, as in open-angle glaucoma, the pressure inside the eye increases. If left untreated, glaucoma will eventually cause blindness. There are usually no early warning signs or symptoms. Depending on the stage of your condition, symptoms may include patchy blind spots in your side vision or central vision. In advanced stages, you may experience tunnel vision. It is important to get your eyes checked regularly especially if you have a history of glaucoma, are near-sighted or have high blood pressure. With early treatment, vision loss can be minimized.
