When should you take Azopt?

You should shake the bottle well before each use. A typical treatment involves taking 1 drop in the affected eye or eyes twice daily. Your doctor may ask you to try 1 drop 3 times a day if she or he deems it necessary. If you are taking another eye drop medication while taking Azopt (Brinzolamide), wait at least ten minutes between taking each medication. Azopt is normally taken the same way with another drug as it is when you take it by itself. Regardless, always take this drug as directed by your doctor. If you are unsure about your dosage or treatment, ask your doctor.

Why is Brinzolamide prescribed to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension?

Your doctor has prescribed Azopt because it is a leading brand product that contains brinzolamide. Brinzolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. What does that mean? Well, it essentially tells the cells inside your eyes to stop producing so much fluid. As fluid is reduced, so is the pressure in your eyes. High pressure in your eyes is one of the causing and maintaining reasons for ocular hypertension and glaucoma. Finally, Azopt is manufactured by Alcon, a top manufacturer dedicated to eye care.

 Azopt side effects

Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns about unwanted side effects you might experience.

Common side effects include:

  • blurred vision,
  • itching,
  • feeling that something is in your eye,
  • runny nose,
  • headache,
  • changes in eye moisture,
  • sometimes eye discharge.

The following side effects are exceptionally rare, but very serious:

  • trouble breathing,
  • significant eye redness,
  • wheezing,
  • hives or skin rash,
  • fainting,
  • irregular heart beat.

The desired effect of taking Azopt is to reduce the pressure and help treat glaucoma in your eyes.

Who might receive a prescription for Azopt  from their doctor?

Your doctor may have prescribed you with Azopt in order to treat ocular hypertension. Ocular hypertension is generally when you have too much pressure inside your eyes. You may also have received a prescription if you suffer from glaucoma, specifically open-angle glaucoma. Glaucoma is when too much pressure inside your eyes has caused damage to the nerves inside your eyes. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma and tends to happen slowly over time. It is painless, and does not show many symptoms until it is in the later stages of its development. Fortunately, Brinzolamide can provide relief and help you control glaucoma. Since open-angle glaucoma can take several decades to develop you may be prescribed Brinzolamide if you are at least 45 years of age, or if you have expressed concerns to your doctor about not being able to see as much in your visual field as you could before.
