What is Zetia (Ezetimibe)?

Zetia, also commonly known as ezetrol or ezetimibe, belongs to a class of antilipemic drugs, which reduces cholesterol and inhibits the absorption of lipid molecules in the body. Zetia is manufactured in tablet form and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2002.

Active ingredient

The active ingredient of Zeita is ezetimibe. It is a white crystalline powder that is insoluble in water; however, it is soluble in alcohol (ethanol, methanol, and acetone). This active ingredient serves as an inhibitor, preventing the absorption of cholesterol from the ileum, and at the same time, lowers the concentration of lipids and cholesterol stored in the liver. Due to this inhibition, the body is then forced to absorb more cholesterol from the blood stream, reducing the concentration of cholesterol in the body.

Conditions treated

• Reduction of cholesterol and lipids from hyperlipidemic patients in combination with a statin or by acting on its own
• Reduction of cholesterol and lipids from mixed hyperlipidemic patients (high cholesterol levels due to a genetic disorder), in combination with fenofibrate, which is another antilipemic drug.
• Reduction of cholesterol and lipids from patients suffering from homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia that are taking certain statin medication.

Indications and dosage information

Use your medication as directed by your healthcare professional. If you are not sure of how to, please check with your doctor. Zetia can be taken with or without food. Each dosage of Zetia should be administered 2 to 4 hours before administration of a bile sequestrant.

For adults suffering from hypercholesterolemia:

10mg daily dose of Zetia is administered.

Adults suffering from mixed hyperlipidemia:

10mg daily dose is administered in combination with fenofibrate.

Warnings and precautions

Contraindications

• The use of Zetia is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Zetia or any of the components used in the formulation.
• It is also a contraindication in nursing and pregnant women.
• Zetia must be avoided by patients suffering from any form of liver disease

Precautions

• Patients who suffer from any liver diseases or have a history of liver problems should inform their physician about their condition before taking Zetia, as it is known to increase hepatic transaminase.
• It is not recommended that patients suffering from hepatic impairment take Zetia.
• Patients suffering from skeletal muscle impairment should speak to their physician or pharmacist before using Zetia or any antilipemic drugs. The exposure of statins and other antilipemic drugs may increase the risk of skeletal toxicity.

Drug interactions

Using Zetia with certain drugs can either potentiate their effects in the body or nullify them. Any combination with fibrates that do not fall in the fenofibrate class of statin compounds is not recommended.
