General Information

Quetiapine is the trade name of a generic drug containing quetiapine fumarate as the active component. Indications and Dosage Information

Always consult with your doctor.

• The dose for schizophrenia is 25 mg twice a day, as a starting dose then it is gradually increased to a well-tolerated dose.
• The dose for mania (i.e. episodes of bipolar disorder associated with mania) is 50 mg twice a day as the starting dose and is increased as tolerated.
• For depression associated with bipolar disorder the starting dose is 50 mg once daily (at night) and is increased to a well-tolerated dose.

Precautions

Serious warning and precaution: the use of Quetiapine has been linked with an increase rate of death in elderly patients with dementia.

• Anemia: May cause reduce the level of red blood cells in the body. Symptoms may include; feeling unusually tired and shortness of breath.
• Bleeding: May cause bleeding disorders by diminishing the amount of platelets in the blood. Symptoms may include; unexplained bruising, frequent nosebleeds and tarry stools.
• Diabetes: May cause difficulty in the control of the blood sugar levels hence causing the appearance of diabetic symptoms or worsening of diabetes in diabetic patients.
• Suicidal or agitated behaviour: May cause agitation in adults and children using it. (Anxious, restless, emotional, aggressive, and not feeling like themselves), and may want to hurt others or themselves. The symptoms may develop a few weeks after initiation of this medication.
• Stopping the medication: Do not suddenly stop this medication without consulting your doctor, symptoms involved with sudden stops include; upset stomach, diarrhea, headache, vomiting, dizziness, irritability and difficulties sleeping.
• Liver function: May reduce liver function.
