Adenocard is a purine-based nucleoside that is important in the body`s day-to-day metabolism. It is used in the treatment of irregular heartbeat and also used in doing certain stress tests in the heart. Adenosine is also involved in energy synthesis and transfer in the body in the form of ATP and ADP. It can also be a vasodilator, enhancing blood flow to poorly supplied parts of the body. Adenosine is administered intravenously and was approved by the FDA in 1998.
The active ingredient of Adenocard is called adenosine. This active ingredient is responsible in blocking or slowing down the conduction pathways that passes through the atrioventricular node, thereby restoring a normal heartbeat in patients suffering from irregular heartbeats or supraventricular tachycardia.
Adenocard is mainly used in treating or correcting irregular heartbeats in patients and in testing stress levels of the heart. It can also be used as a neuromodulator.
The generic name of Adenocard is adenosine. Other brand names include:
Use your medication as directed by your healthcare professional. It is recommended to take your daily dose of Adenocard at the same time every day.
Adults: A 6mg dose can be given intravenously by rapid bolus (1 to 2 seconds). If the drug does not produce results after 1 to 2 minutes, a second dosage of 12mg may be given and can be repeated if required.
Children: The dosage for children is based on weight. Children, newborns, or infants who weigh less than 50kg are given 0.05mg to 0.1mg per kg dose of Adenosine via rapid IV bolus. If there are no positive results after 1 to 2 minutes, increments of 0.05mg to 0.1mg per kg can be added. A maximum dose of 0.3mg per kg can be used until positive results are attained. Children who weigh more than 50kg are given the same dosage as an adult.
Adenocard may induce some side effects, which include, but are not limited to, the list below. Report any new symptoms occurring after the use of Adenosine.
Always remember to inform your doctor of any allergies or medical condition you may have, medications you are currently taking, if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, and any other important health conditions you might have.
Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about other possible precautions and warnings as the list above may not be exhaustive.
Taking Adenocard with certain drugs can either potentiate their effects in the body or nullify them. Therefore, you should know the medicines you take and always remember to tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you are prescribed new medicine. However, it is not recommended to take Adenosine with caffeine-based supplements or medication, as this negatively affects the functions of Adenocard.
Take a dose as soon as you remember, however if you remember shortly before the next dose, only take one dose. Never double up on doses.
